A contemporary swimming pool embedded within the landscape of a Grade II listed house, where topography, materiality and heritage shape a discrete intervention.

Set within the enclosed garden of a Grade II listed home in the South Downs National Park, the project introduces a semi-sunken lap pool that sits quietly within the existing landscape. Rather than reshaping the site, the design takes advantage of the natural change in level, reducing excavation while minimising its visual impact.

Clad in natural flint and paired with a dark pool lining, the intervention draws on the material character of the existing buildings and surrounding walls. Native planting, retained hedgerows and the absence of external lighting further preserve the garden's tranquil setting, allowing the pool to become a discrete addition that complements both the historic architecture and the wider landscape.

Drawing on the textures and colours of the surrounding landscape, the project employs a restrained palette of flint, stone and dark water created by black ceramic tiles and soft planting. Guided by longevity and a strong sense of place, these carefully chosen materials allow the intervention to feel quietly rooted within the garden.
